Why support FBS?
We need additional funds to deliver our unique brand of education
As a Free School, The Fulham Boys School is a non-profit-making, non-selective independent state school with control over its curriculum and standards. We can only achieve our vision to be one of the best schools in the country, state or private, with additional support. This is the reason why we are asking you to support our school, to serve current and future generations of FBS boys.
The government provides funding of around £6,000 per child per year for a standard secondary education. The school aims to raise a further £500,000-£1 million per annum through The FBS Foundation to enable us to offer extras which are not covered by government funding alone, including:
High quality staff recruitment and retention
Targeted pastoral support
Smaller class sizes and lower pupil-teacher ratio
Longer enriching school day
Co-curricular and enterprise programmes
Breakfast club
We estimate that we need to raise in excess of £125 per month per student in order to fulfil our ambitions aims.
The FBS Foundation also engages with a wider network of companies, trusts, philanthropists and charities. If any of these fall within your network and you feel able to offer guidance or introductions, it would be much appreciated.
The FBS Foundation
The FBS Foundation is a charity which has the sole purpose of raising funds to support the education of every student at The Fulham Boys School.
Please take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the purpose and aims of The FBS Foundation.
The impact of The FBS Foundation is immense and growing with each passing year. Please read our latest impact report below.

Membership of the 2014 Circle is from as little as £2.01 a month, and we hope that in the years ahead, hundreds, if not thousands of alumni will join. Together, the whole of the alumni community becomes much greater than the sum of its parts. We thank all 2014 Circle joiners for their generosity to the school.

What is the process?
Seeking Legal Advice
We always recommend that if you are considering creating or amending a will you should engage a solicitor to help you. A will is an important part of your estate planning and may have tax and other implications which it is important are properly addressed, particularly if you are changing the terms of an existing will.
Benefitting the School
There are a number of different kinds of legacy that you could consider including in your will to benefit the School. More information about the options open to you is set out below.
Whatever kind of legacy you may decide to leave, it will be important that the School is properly identified in your will, so that your executors are able to clearly identify the School as a beneficiary and are able to get in touch with us.
Using the following details will ensure that the School is properly identified:
The Fulham Boys School School Foundation, 532 Fulham Road, London, SW6 5BD
Registered charity number 1197150
Can I leave my gift to the School for a specific purpose?
Yes, you can. The Fulham Boys School Foundation is raising funds for its work in four core areas:
- Smaller Class sizes
- Our co-curricular programme
- Our enterprise programme
- Recruitment and retention of great teachers
We also welcome legacies to support our students with access to bursaries for university support – be this buying resources, setting up home or support with fees.
Additionally, we operate a support fund for existing students and their families in need of financial help and assistance.
You may of course have your own preference; we would be happy to discuss this with you.
Please do note that legacies given for very narrow or restricted purposes need careful consideration. Any legacy left to the School for a specific purpose will of course be used by the School only for that
purpose, but if this is very specific its value to the School and its pupils may be restricted in practice, particularly as the School will continue to grow and develop over time.
You may therefore prefer to leave a legacy to support the general purposes of the School, which would enable us to apply your legacy in the way we decide will benefit the School and its pupils at the time of receipt.
We have suggested a form of words for an “unrestricted” legacy of this kind, which you can discuss with your solicitor.
How do I include a legacy in my will?
We have prepared some examples of the kind of provisions that might be used in order to help you consider what kind of legacy you may like to leave to the School and to assist you in your discussions with your solicitor, who can advise you on how they can best be incorporated into your will:
Unrestricted residuary legacy
If you are considering leaving the School a share or proportion of your estate which can be used by the School for its general charitable purposes, then a provision of the following kind may be appropriate:
I give [number]% of the residue of my estate (before the deduction of inheritance tax if any is payable) to The Fulham Boys School Foundation, 532 Fulham Road, London, SW6 5BD Registered charity number 1159542 (“The school”) for the general charitable purposes of the School.
The value of a legacy of this kind will vary depending upon the value of your estate. This approach will however ensure that other beneficiaries of your estate will receive a proportionate share of whatever your estate is worth on your death.
Unrestricted pecuniary legacy
If you are considering leaving the School a legacy of a fixed amount out of your estate which can be used by the School for its general charitable purposes, then a provision of the following kind may be appropriate:
I give the sum of £ [amount in numbers and words] free of tax to The Fulham Boys School Foundation, 532 Fulham Road, London, SW6 5BD Registered charity number 1159542 (“The school”) for the general charitable purposes of the School.
Unlike a residuary legacy, the value of a legacy of this kind will obviously not vary depending upon the value of your estate, so may have an effect on value received by the beneficiaries of the residue of your estate.
It may also be affected by inflation over time. It would be possible to add a proviso to a legacy of this kind in order to help protect your legacy to the School from being adversely affected by inflation:
My gift shall be index-linked, so that the actual amount given shall be found by dividing the gift by the Retail Prices Index (“RPI”) figure for the month in which this Will is executed and multiplying the result by the RPI figure for the month in which I die.
Restricting a legacy for a particular purpose
You may decide that either kind of legacy (whether of a specified share in your estate or of a fixed amount) should be applied by the School for a particular purpose, in which case the following provision may be appropriate:
I give [for a residuary legacy:[xx]% of the residue of my estate (before the deduction of inheritance tax if any is payable)] or [for a pecuniary legacy: the sum of £[amount in numbers and words] free of tax] to The Fulham Boys School Foundation, 532 Fulham Road, London, SW6 5BD Registered charity number 1159542 (“The School”) to be applied by the School [e.g. to provide grants, bursaries and other forms of financial assistance to pupils and prospective pupils of the School who are in need by reason of financial hardship].
If you are thinking of leaving a restricted legacy of this kind please can we ask that, if you are happy to do so, you get in touch with us so that we can discuss how best to help achieve your aims.
Specific legacies
You may decide that you would like to leave the School a“specific legacy”. You should discuss with your solicitor how best to provide for this in your will. If you are thinking about leaving the school a specific legacy of this kind, we ask that, if you are happy to do so, you get in touch with us so that we can discuss how best to help achieve your aims.
Endowment Funds
It would be possible for your legacy to be used to create an “endowment fund” where the School is only permitted to invest the capital amount of your legacy and spend the income it generates. Such legacies are of course very gratefully received by the School, but do not always enable us to use them as effectively as possible. Again, if you are considering leaving a legacy of this kind we ask that, if you are happy to do so, you get in touch with us so that we can discuss how best to help achieve your aims.
We are always pleased to provide more information about our legacy programme and the work that we can do as a result of the legacies the School receives. Our legacies are administered through The Fulham Boys School Foundation which has a Board of Trustees with representation independent from The Fulham Boys School.
Should you wish to speak to us with regard to a legacy, please contact Julian Thomas, CEO of The Fulham Boys School Trust via email: j.thomas@fulhamboysschool.org.uk
The FBS Support Fund was set up in 2020 to support FBS boys and their families facing financial hardship. The Fund helps pay for uniform and equipment for those in need as well as supporting with music and drama lessons for boys for whom finance is a barrier to achievement in the Arts.
Other Ways To Contribute
Support An Enterprising Approach To Learning
Traditional education is not providing children with the skills they need to thrive in the real world, according to the World Economic Forum. That’s why The Fulham Boys School approach is consciously different.
A publicly funded, non-selective school, our curriculum goes far beyond the traditional, to prepare boys for life beyond the classroom:
- Small classes and great teachers mean better academic attainment
- Extended school day means more time for extracurricular activities, sports and soft skills
- Year-round Enterprise programme means real-world learning outside the classroom.
We believe that all boys, regardless of background, should have equal opportunities to thrive in school and flourish in the workplace. Bridging the gap between state and private education, we do not select on academic aptitude or family income, instead welcoming boys from all walks of life, ensuring ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity in our unique school community.
Learning | Sport | Enterprise | Opportunity
We offer boys more than the Department for Education funding covers, so we ask families that can afford it, to contribute £1,200 per boy per year to make up the difference. 40% of our boys are from backgrounds that make financial contributions impossible, so our charitable foundation works hard to help us raise the funds that will keep our school open to all.
- £1,000 would provide work experience for a Year 10 student who cannot otherwise access a suitable placement,
- £10,000 would enable one boy to benefit from all the enterprise, extracurricular and sporting opportunities at FBS for his whole secondary school life,
- £25,000 would fund a full week of dedicated Enterprise learning for the whole school – from finance workshops to university visits, teambuilding to STEAM.
We know our model works – since we were founded in 2014, our first boys have been offered Oxbridge places, and all our boys have enjoyed a richer and more varied learning experience than is expected in a state secondary. Boys take personal responsibility for planning and delivering
projects, develop leadership and teamwork through a wide range of sports and extracurricular activities, and learn financial skills in real-world scenarios, including the Young Enterprise ‘Tenner Challenge’, where even our youngest pupils can learn to turn a substantial profit on £10.

A key focus area for the current academic year is the FBS breakfast club. Our school day runs from 8:30am until 5:00pm. We know that lots of our boys leave their house each day without eating so we aim to help everyone by offering free breakfast items to our students to set them up for the day as well as fruit during morning break to support a healthy, balanced diet.
In addition to nutritious food, there is an opportunity for the boys to start the day in a sociable, supportive eating occasion with other boys and staff. The Breakfast Club also presents an opportunity for staff to support specific boys socially and academically as required.
The cost of this support is £25,000 per annum.

Volunteer – Our greatest asset is our community
We know that our network of parents, family members, friends and business contacts hold vast knowledge and skills which we hope to be able to share for the benefit of our boys.
Our outstanding FBS Enterprise Programme is made possible by the opportunities created for the boys of FBS by individuals, community groups, charities and businesses within the school, community and workplaces.
We are very proud of the mutual benefit these programmes generate by way of the creation of both experience for our boys but also the valuable contribution they have made to community groups, charities and businesses in realising their social goals and meeting their Corporate Social Responsibility objectives.
We also need volunteers to help us in school with a variety of activities from library administration to participation in our second ‘speed networking afternoon where boys choosing their GCSE options are able to find out about different careers from the people doing those jobs – you!
If you have skills and time that you think will be of use to us, please complete this volunteer form and we’ll be in touch.

These ad hoc opportunities could be for half a day, one day or several days.

Many take place after school (4.10-5pm) but there is some flexibility with pre-school, lunchtime and even during the school day sessions. We also look for support for CV writing and mock interviews at various points throughout the year.
FBS Community
As a school we seek to engage our extended school community of families and friends with a programme of inclusive social and cultural events. We invite the families and friends of FBS to volunteer to help organise these events. There are many roles available from pre-event organisation to event hosting and organisation with options for regular or one off involvement.
