The Bridge – Friday 9th June

Our Weekly Newsletter Connecting School and Home

Headmaster’s Message

It has been a busy first week of the final half term of the year and it was great to welcome our boys back on Monday morning. There is a lot happening this half term as we round off the academic year with our summer fair / food market, swimming gala, sports day and Enterprise week some of the highlights.

On Tuesday, our Year 8 boys visited Kensington Gardens where they were immersed in nature examining insects, making bird boxes and understanding more about plants. These sorts of opportunities are really important for our boys and it is fantastic that the Royal Parks are able to offer these experiences.
Image
We also met many of our Y6 pupils and their parents this week at our annual parent partnership meeting. We held a question and answer session for parents and boys and it was great to see the boys asking lots of questions about what they can expect at FBS next year. All of these boys and their parents are now part of the FBS family and we’re looking forward to seeing them all in the coming weeks at the summer fair and transition days.

In a couple of weeks’ time, boys in Years 7 to 9 will undertake their end of year assessments and will be covering key areas of revision in lessons in the run up to these. All assessments will take place during normal timetabled lessons with the exception of English, Maths and Science in Year 9 which will be sat as a whole year group in the main hall. End of year progress reports will be published in the last week of term.

Earlier this week, I sent all parents and carers this letter asking for your support in maintaining high standards in and out of school. Members of the public often comment to us about how smart our boys look and how polite they are and it is essential that we uphold those standards on a consistent basis. thank you for your continued support in these matters.

Finally, if anybody in our parent body has contacts with any senior executives in British Gas, we would like to hear from you. Please get in touch with Mark Harris, Head of Finance & Operations via email: m.harris@fulhamboysschool.org.uk or by phone via the school office.

Have a restful weekend,

David Smith

Headmaster

From The FBS Foundation

Oh what a night!

On the 18th May, The FBS Foundation held its most ambitious fundraising event yet…and what a night it was! Around 150 members of the school community came together at the iconic Tramp private members club to eat, dance, have fun and, most importantly, raise money, which will now be used for the benefit of every student at FBS.

I would like to thank again all those who attended and, particularly, Chiara Brown, Anna Brennan, Sarah Bender and Anoushka Brand, who worked so hard to make it a success. Nearly £40,000 was raised which will now be used by FBS for educational initiatives at the school. Examples of this include funding for expert external coaches for the co-curricular programme, additional hours of pastoral support for students in need, and the covering the costs of school trips for those students who require it. On the night we also received pledges for a variety of other school needs, including additional bursaries for Key Stage 5 students, scientific microscopes for the science department, an interactive globe for the geography department, textbooks for use in various lessons, a class set of “show me” boards, rugby balls for the sports department, and spare sets of uniform and shoes. Please see below for a selection of photos from the evening.

This school relies heavily on the generosity of its parent body to provide a unique education, and there is no better time to thank you all once again for your commitment. You can be assured that The FBS Foundation will continue to play its part by doing all it can to support the school in its endeavours.

Best wishes,

Julian Thomas

Other Important Information

Sports and PE Kit – Injuries and Illness

Kit: For the summer term, students should be wearing trainers, white socks and white polo shirts for both PE lessons and sports afternoons/mornings. We would encourage students to also bring a fleece or rain jacket just in case. As the weather gets hotter, please ensure your son has a water bottle and sun cream available. If required, please follow this Tylers Sportswear link for The Fulham Boys School kit page.

Injuries/Illness: Students are expected to be in full PE kit unless they are unable to get themselves changed (ie. they are on crutches or have a cast). Should your son have a legitimate injury or illness that might prevent them from fully engaging in PE lessons they should still bring their kit and support in lessons as far as they are able. If you believe that your son will not be able to manage this then a request should be made to your son’s Head of House to ask for alternative arrangements to be made during PE lessons and Sports Afternoon.

Peripatetic Music Lessons

There is availability at the school for lessons in the following instruments: bass guitar, brass, drums, guitar, piano, woodwind (saxophone, clarinet and flute) and finally lessons for singing. If you think your son would be interested in taking part in these lessons, contact either Mr Chawla (r.chawla@fulhamboysschool.org.uk) or Mr Gleed (o.gleed@fulhamboysschool.org.uk) to find out more.

The Drum/Guitar teacher would like to increase his uptake for instrumental lessons. Again, please contact either Mr Chawla or Mr Gleed if your son would be interested. Please see his introductory video here.

Parent Reminder For Visiting School

This is a polite reminder that parents should avoid visiting reception wishing to speak with a teacher, form tutor, HoH etc without prior arrangement. Parents should contact the relevant staff member by email to make an appointment. Thank you.
