Headmaster’s Message
David Smith
Headmaster
From The FBS Foundation
There when it matters most
Life can be hard sometimes. Perhaps even harder during the teenage years when events outside of a child’s control can push them into difficulties, leaving them feeling lost, alone, and without the maturity or experience to cope. No child is likely to get through school without the odd bump in the road and so at FBS we understand how important it is to have available the support and guidance that every child needs. There is perhaps nothing more important. A happy child will be a successful child.
It was with great pleasure therefore to read an email that dropped into Mr Smith’s inbox this week from a parent, paying tribute to the pastoral support given to their child. I have reproduced an anonymised extract below:
Words cannot adequately convey the depth of my gratitude for the support you have shown XXXX. Your consistency, follow-through, and genuine care have made an immeasurable difference in his life. I firmly believe that the young man XXXX has become today is a reflection of the incredible guidance
and encouragement he has received from your school.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your exceptional support. Your dedication to XXXX’s well-being has touched our family deeply, and we are forever grateful.. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such a remarkable school in our lives.
It is lovely to read, and I am so pleased that FBS has been able to make such a difference to this young man’s life.
You might wonder though why this email is appearing in The Foundation blog. The answer is simple: without the funds provided by The FBS Foundation, the additional intensive pastoral support that this child received would not have been available. Without the donations made by parents to The Foundation we could not have supported this child in the same way, and it is why we work so hard to raise additional funds every year.
If you are one of our many generous donors, you should know that it is your support that has helped to change this young man’s life. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Julian Thomas

Japanese Cultural Evening – Wednesday 5th July 6pm – 8pm
Come and Celebrate ‘Teaching Japanese @ FBS’ ‘s First birthday!! (starting in the library and ending in the drama studio)
After a year of interest in Japanese culture and language through co-curricular activities and a lunchtime club, a growing number of boys were interested in learning the language. We found an experienced Japanese teacher, Asami Miyamoto, who successfully applied for a grant from the Japan Foundation. Thanks to their financial support, on 9th June 2022 we began our FBS Japanese language journey! A year on, we have a Japanese GCSE class of boys from Year 7,8,9,10 and 11 who study together mainly through 2 early morning online classes from 7:30 to 8:20am.
To recognise the achievement of everyone involved we want to celebrate this ‘First year of teaching Japanese’ birthday with an “all-things-Japanese” party event. We would love boys and parents to come and learn about Japanese culture, try some origami, have a crack at some calligraphy, taste some typical Japanese food and, best of all, hear from the boys themselves as to what they have learnt. Our teacher Asami Miyamoto who has been teaching our boys live classes from Tokyo and some special Japanese guests are attending, including, hopefully, representatives of the Japan Foundation who have so generously supported us.
The plan for the evening is to start going round different ‘stations’ to observe and take part in different Japanese activities, some involving competitions. There will be some Japanese food and then we will end our evening in the drama studio with competition results, hear a little about our Japanese Journey and enjoy some performances from the boys.
The event is open to everyone, particularly those whose boys have participated in the ‘For the love of Japan society’, co-curricular clubs and current Japanese GCSE course, but anyone interested in learning about Japanese culture and language.
Please complete this Google form if you would like to attend.
