The Bridge – Friday 20th October

Our Weekly Newsletter Connecting School and Home

From the Headmaster

It has been a successful final week of the term at FBS.

On Tuesday we were privileged to be joined in Whole School Assembly by author, broadcaster and rapper Guvna B. In a fireside chat with Mr O’Donnell he talked about his music, his faith and his work. His visit stemmed from Eistedfodd earlier this year when Dickens House performed one of his songs. It was great to have him at school.

On Tuesday evening we welcomed our Year 13 parents into school for the first face to face parent consultation event for almost four years. Our staff reported many productive conversations and we look forward to our Year 11 evening on 8th November.

On Wednesday we held our first Lads and Dads event of the year loosely themed around the Rugby World Cup. The evening comprised of some literacy elements, a quiz and some sporting activities including wheelbarrow races.

On Thursday I held a coffee morning in the library. Mr Witter, Director of Sport and Co-Curricular was on hand to answer questions on our current provision and future plans and we also discussed behaviour, ownwork and communications. There will be coffee afternoons in the new year and other opportunities throughout the year for parents to come to school, meet staff and give us feedback.

Please do read on in whole school news for information on upcoming overseas trips as well as updates from the Friends of FBS regarding nearly new uniform sales which will now be available on demand.

I look forward to welcoming boys back to school on 6th November. For some the holiday is a chance to relax after a long half term and for others in exam year groups, it is a good opportunity to continue some revision to build on the learning points from recent mock examinations.

I wish you all a pleasant half term,

David Smith
Headmaster

Enrichment

It has been great to see boys involved in so many different activities during the new Enrichment slots (4.10-5pm). We have evaluated the provision and after half-term the plan for Enrichment will be as follows:

  • Each day there will be provision for Prep and Assisted Prep in the Maths classrooms (Rooms 201-203).

  • Each day there will be opportunities for boys to play board games or chess in the Geography classrooms (Rooms 321 & 328).

  • Boys will not need to sign up for these sessions; they will be available each day. If boys attend they will be added to a register for that day only.

  • Other Enrichment sessions targeted at school sports teams, Duke of Edinburgh, FBS Voice, drama productions, choir, orchestra, languages sessions and more will continue to run during the Enrichment slot. Staff running these sessions will advertise them directly to relevant boys. These are sessions that will require boys to commit to attending every week.

  • On Thursdays all of Year 11 will have mandatory interventions during the Enrichment slot. They will be given more information about which academic sessions to attend after half-term. Some Year 11 boys who are an academic cause for concern may be required to also attend a Monday Prep session focused on their year group.

  • Sixth Form interventions will continue to run during the Enrichment slot.

This is the opportunity to come and meet your son’s GCSE teachers to discuss his recent mock exam grade, and exactly what he needs to do now to reach his potential in the summer exams.

Appointments are available to book now on School Cloud. We are still using this to manage bookings even though the meetings are face to face. You can also find a link to this booking system on Parent Portal, and on the website under FBS Parent Platforms. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Sixth Form Open Evening

Our Sixth Form Open Evening will take place on Thursday 16th November. We invite all Year 11 students and parents to this event. Please use this Sixth Form Open Evening Google form to register attendance.
