The Bridge – Friday 17th November

Our Weekly Newsletter Connecting School and Home

From the Headmaster

This week, I have written to all parents about online safety. If you have not yet read my letter, please do take time to do so and think about how you are able to support your sons to keep them safe. I will be speaking to all boys in assembly on Tuesday to reinforce messages about the need to use social media appropriately and to treat others with the respect they deserve.

Today, the whole of year 8 visited a Sikh Gurdwara as part of their studies of the Sikh religion and culture. This is the first time we have been able to run such a trip and the boys can be commended in their behaviour throughout the day.

Yesterday, we held our Sixth Form open evening. It was great to see lots of year 11 boys and parents at the event and I look forward to welcoming many of you into our Sixth Form next September. Applications are now open and must be completed by the boys themselves – parents do not have access to the form.

Next Tuesday is our Year 9 Parent Consultation evening. If you have not yet booked appointments, please do so over the weekend by following this link. This event is online.

In two weeks’ time, on Saturday 2nd December, we have the Friends of FBS Christmas Fair. This is always a great event in the school calendar and I hope many of you will be able to join us on the day. Please do look at the Friends section below for more details of the fair and how you can get involved.

Have a pleasant weekend,

David Smith
Headmaster

From The FBS Foundation

Boost your donation through “match funding” – it’s easy and the impact is huge

Over the last few weeks, a number of parents have set up “match funding” with their employers.

This has prompted me to write to give you a reminder that many of you could double your donation to The FBS Foundation without any cost to yourself (and very little effort).

A huge number of companies in the UK offer to match any charitable donations made by employees and there is a good chance that you may work for one of them. If so, we would be incredibly grateful if you could take them up on this generous offer.

There is no definitive list of companies who offer match funding but there are numerous examples including banks, building societies, utilities providers, phone companies and supermarkets.

We believe, for example, that match funding opportunities are available at:

NatWest Group Aviva
BAE Systems
Barclays Bank
BP
British American Tobacco
British Gas
BT Group
Coca-Cola European Partners
Deloitte
Deutsche Bank
Diageo
Ernst & Young
GlaxoSmithKline
Goldman Sachs
Google
HSBC
IBM
John Lewis Partnership
JPMorgan Chase
KPMG
Lloyds Banking Group
Marks & Spencer
Microsoft
Morgan Stanley
Nationwide Building Society
Nestle
PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers)
RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland)
Rolls-Royce
Royal Mail
Santander
Shell
Standard Chartered
Tesco
Unilever
Vodafone
And many more….

We would be most grateful if you could email your HR department to ask if they offer match funding for charitable donations. If the answer is yes, quote our charity details (below) and let us know.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch.

If a number of our donors can do this, the impact on the school will be huge.

Thank you in advance.

John Agard Performing ‘Waiting for Shakespeare’ – Tuesday 5th December and Wednesday 6th December – 7pm

A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to see one of the GCSE Poets Live on Stage!

John Agard is a multi-award winning poet and the recipient of the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2012. His poems are studied by over 500,000 GCSE students every year, including Fulham Boys! He has published over 50 books, collaborated with musicians such as Wretch 32 and Loyle Carner, and appeared on the TV series, ‘Gangs of London’ alongside Joe Cole (‘Peaky Blinders’) and Lucian Msamati (‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Noughts and Crosses’).

In the premiere of his latest one-man show, Waiting for Shakespeare, John takes on the character of FOOL, now a famous chat show host, whose imminently expected guest is none other than the great William Shakespeare. But will The Bard arrive on time for this exclusive posthumous interview?

John has chosen only two schools to visit with this new show and we are so excited to be one of them!

Performances will take place in the Drama Studio on Tuesday 5th December and Wednesday 6th December at 7pm. Doors will open at 6.30pm and refreshments will be available before the show.

Tickets are £10 and will be available on ParentPay from Monday 20th November.

Carol Service – Thursday 7th December – 5:15pm

Venue:  St Paul’s (HTB) Onslow Square, 44 Onslow Square, South Kensington, London SW7 3NX

The carol service is always a highlight of the FBS year, complete with orchestra, choir, organ, readings and a talk about the Christian message of Christmas. We expect the service to last around an hour, with refreshments afterwards.

For this year we have decided that Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) will be expected to attend. They will walk with staff from school to the church, and be dismissed from there at the end of the service. If, due to exceptional circumstances, boys in Key Stage 3 are unable to attend, please contact the Headmaster via email (d.smith@fulhamboysschool.org.uk). Enrichment sessions, intervention sessions and detentions will not take place on that day.

We also strongly encourage all parents of boys in Key Stage 3 to join us for this important event.

We know that the service is a highlight for lots of boys and parents in other year groups, and they are also very welcome to attend. The Sixth Form student leadership team will also be in attendance.

If you are planning to attend we ask that you complete this Carol Service Google Form, so that we are able to organise Christmas refreshments for after the service. The carol service is very popular, so we advise you to complete the form as soon as possible to book your space.

Please also note, on Friday 8th December, there will be a later start to the school day. Boys will be expected at school by 8:55am.

Nasal Flu Vaccinations – Thursday 23rd November

We’re heading back to Italy for the 2024 Christmas ski trip. The approximate cost of the trip is £1,200. Registration opens in December 2023

Rugby Tour to South Africa – Easter 2025
This trip is open to boys currently in years 7, 8, 9, and 11 and will be our biggest FBS trip to date. The trip will be for two weeks with an approximate cost of £3,000. Christmas Card Competition – Deadline Friday 24th November

Boys have been informed internally of a Christmas card competition taking place for the next two weeks. The top 3 designs will be selected and announced (1 winner from each Key Stage). Year 7 and 8 Mandarin Lessons at St Paul’s Girls School

We are delighted to be able to pass on and recommend a wonderful opportunity for your Y7 or Y8 boys to be part of a Mandarin club run by St Paul’s Girls’ School. They have tremendous experience and expertise in teaching Mandarin Chinese, with native teachers and student helpers.

The club will combine culture with language and have plenty of activities so it promises to be fun and exciting for the boys.

It will run on Tuesdays from 4:30pm to 5:15pm at St Paul’s Girls’ School, a partner school of ours in the West London Partnership, starting on Tuesday 28th November and running all the way through to the summer.

If you were initially interested in your son taking part in these lessons, please contact Mr Hartigan to find out more: m.hartigan@fulhamboysschool.org.uk.

Students/Parents who are purchasing extra ID cards for boys in Year 7 – 11, spares of these will remain in the IT Office.
