The Bridge – Friday 15th September

Our Weekly Newsletter Connecting School and Home

Headmaster’s Message

We have arrived at the end of the first full week of the new term which has been packed as always. Our staff have loved getting to know their classes and the boys have been making new friends and catching up with old ones. Our co-curricular and enrichment programmes started in earnest this week and it was brilliant to see the boys getting stuck into all of the activities. We ran a myriad of sports sessions, swimming, climbing, kayaking, German, Japanese and Latin as well as culinary skills with our Head Chef Mike. For many of our staff running sessions, it is an opportunity to share things that they are passionate about with our boys and we hope that all of our boys find something they love to do.

On Wednesday, we held our first parent events of the year – principally for Year 7 and Year 12 parents. It was great to meet so many of you at the event and be able to answer questions. Next week, we have our annual awards evening where all school staff will be in attendance and there is an extra opportunity to meet some of your son’s teachers. The evening itself will celebrate our past and present students who have excelled over the past year. Our special guest is World 1500m champion Jake Wightman.  You can sign up to the event using the google form. The evening begins with a drinks reception from 6.30pm with the awards event commencing shortly after 7pm.

We had mixed sporting success on the rugby field this week with four fixtures against Emmanuel School. The Year 8s and the 1st XV comfortably won their games while the Year 10s As and Bs were not successful this time. We have a packed fixture programme throughout the autumn term with entries into rugby and football competitions so there are many opportunities for boys to represent the school. This afternoon, Mr. Witter held football trials for Year 7 with almost 100 boys in attendance and we can be confident of success judging by the talent on show.

Next week, our Year 11 and Year 13 students start their first round of mock examinations. You can find exam timetables in the year group sections of the newsletter. The results of these exams will enable our boys to know key areas of focus for revision during the year. Also next week, our first overseas trip of the year will see a group of boys travel to Barcelona where they will practice their language skills and see some cultural highlights so I look forward to hearing all about it when the boys return!

Wishing you a pleasant weekend.

David Smith

Headmaster

From The FBS Foundation

Julian, the FBS Foundation’s CEO, is away this week so he left a gap between his excellent updates for me to fill. It’s a great opportunity for me to share a few thoughts.

My son successfully completed his GSCEs at FBS this year and so started sixth form last week. All sixth form parents were invited to an information evening at the school on Wednesday as there are so many new things for us to get our heads around. I was really impressed with what we learned about how sixth form is structured, what the boys can expect (and what is expected of them!) and the incredible level of support, pastoral and academic, that they will get along the way – not just in preparing the for exams, but also for University.

We’ve all seen how great the results were at GCSE and A Level this year – but one thing that stood out for me, was that 96% of A level boys were offered a University place of their choosing. That is a truly remarkable achievement and a huge credit to Ms Clegg and her sixth form team.

At the drinks reception afterwards, the pride in the school and the passion for bringing the best out in our boys was clear in all of the teachers I spoke to, and in particular in David Smith, the Headmaster.

It refreshed my confidence that my son is in the best school he could be in. For any new boys and families joining this year, be that year 7 or sixth form,  or any other year group, firstly a warm welcome, and secondly, please take this as some reassurance that I believe you have made the right choice.

FBS promises, and FBS delivers, a pioneering education to boys from all walks of life.

Given my role, it won’t surprise you that I have to stress the fact that none of this can happen without our pioneering funding model – the generous financial support of parents, charitable foundations and business.

We raised c. £400,000 for the school last year but the requirement for funding is permanent and growing so we need as many people donating as possible. We are also always open to fundraising ideas and particularly, introductions to other potential sources of funding (businesses, philanthropists, institutions etc.) so please get in touch with me or Julian Thomas (j.thomas@fulhamboysschool.org.uk) and we would be delighted to discuss them with you.

For anyone who can afford it, we ask for a monthly donation of £125 per boy per month. Many parents choose to donate more, to cover the cost of boys whose families cannot afford to give, but any and every donation is welcome. Everything is treated completely confidentially.

If you need to set up a regular donation,  please follow the link to our donations page or email or Mark Harris (m.harris@fulhamboysschool.org.uk) to adjust an existing donation. You can also make a one-off donation.

I look forward to supporting the continuing success of FBS, and I invite you all to play your part.
