Headmaster’s Message

And that’s a wrap!

We have ended this year with two assemblies. Our first was our end of year service where Mr O’Donnell challenged the school to reflect on the message of Jesus Christ through John 3:16. The second was our celebration assembly where we had the opportunity to present awards to several boys and present the house cup; congratulations Liddell!

Sandwiched between these two assemblies all boys threw themselves into Enterprise Week. Boys have been on Duke of Edinburgh, competed in the famous tube challenge, written and performed plays, experienced the green screen of media, played a lot of sport and presented their enterprise logs to staff and parents. The can-do attitude of FBS was very much on display.

I talk about habituation a lot to staff and students. We must never simply get used to what we have and think it is just normal; FBS is not a normal school. We have certainly made our mistakes, this is part of the territory for a pioneering school that wants to push boundaries. However we have delivered an education to be proud of; our boys have had memorable experiences outside of the classroom and have thrived academically.

There is so much to be thankful for. In a time of financial pressure and a national educational crisis, FBS still stands above the rest. Our boys academically succeed and surpass their target grades, as always we are fully staffed for September, we are once again the school of first choice in the borough with nearly 600 applying for 130 Year 7 places, our sixth form will be full for the first time in September and our parents are engaged; giving time, energy and money to the school.

At the weekend, I held the last Saturday detention of the year (standards remain!) before I downed tools to now spend time with my family. I will be back at school to celebrate with our Year 11 and Year 13 when they receive their GCSE and A-Level results; it’s always a highlight to see the fruit of such hard work.

I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy summer and look forward to working alongside each other in the next academic year.

David Smith

Headmaster

Annual Awards Evening – Tuesday 19th September

We are very excited that our annual awards evening is coming up in September. This important event will be taking place on Tuesday 19th September at 7pm. This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the exceptional achievements of our young men as well as celebrate the successes of the school as a whole. There will be a small art exhibition, musical performances, a bar and canapes, a chance to meet the new staff including our new Director of Sport and a special guest speaker in the evening.

Those boys who have been nominated for an award will receive an official invitation and these parents will have a reserved seat.  We would like as many of our school community to attend as possible but seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis as the capacity of our school hall is limited. If you would like to attend please complete this short Google form. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Other Important Information

Japanese at FBS – Birthday Celebration Event

Last Wednesday, 5th July, Asami Miyamoto the Japanese teacher and Mr Hartigan (supported by Lauren Hoskin, Head of MFL),  held the first birthday party for teaching Japanese at FBS. From all accounts it was a great success with between 65 and 70 people attending.

All the boys who have been studying Japanese in the early morning classes came together with relatives, mostly parents, but also siblings, uncles and aunts. We had guests from the Japan Foundation, the Japanese School and a Japanese lady who has been coming to our lunchtime Japanese Society. The Japanese Language boys were joined with others from the Japanese Society and Y12 Japanese music ‘specialist’, Connor Hayes, and others to show off Japanese culture through calligraphy, manga drawing, music and even Japanese sword fighting.

Following that there was Japanese food prepared by Mike who put on a magnificent spread of sushi, temaki and miso soup. Hearing from one of the Japan Foundation delegates how good it was certainly was a massive seal of approval. Mike and his team made the evening a Japanese feast.

As a result of the party there are two more boys who have said they want to study Japanese. The Japan Foundation who gave us a grant last year have been impressed and are ready to support us until the end of this year. The representatives of the Japanese School which runs in Acton have mentioned the desire to have some form of exchange.

If any more boys wish to start Japanese we are looking to start some classes for beginners next term. Please contact m.hartigan@fulhamboysschool.org.uk for further information.
