The News We’ve All Been Waiting For!
If I say ‘Kellogs’ you’ll probably think ‘cornflakes’. If I say ‘Fulham Boys School’ you may well think ‘site’!
‘Where is your permanent site? When will you be announcing your permanent site? How long will you be on your temporary site?’. I’ve lost count of the times I have been asked these questions since I became the Headmaster of The Fulham Boys School.
‘Site’ almost prevented us from opening in 2014 – despite being told by the DfE that our education plans and policies were the ‘the best, most refreshing and reflective they have seen’. ‘Site’ understandably made some parents think twice about FBS – despite the promise of a school that was told this summer it is in a position to become beyond outstanding.
So, it felt really good this week to finally announce our permanent site! And what’s more, it isn’t just any old site. It is the perfect site! It is in the heart of Fulham, with ample space for the school to grow into its sixth form. It is a ‘site’ befitting a school determined to become one of the best in the country.
At last, ‘site’ is something to be excited about. Something that boys, teachers, parents, governors, businesses, the community, can begin to come up with ideas for, and plan how we can make it something really special. I have no doubt, given our track record so far, that we will really push the boundaries in creating our perfect ‘site’. After all it will be our home for hundreds of years, so we’ve got to get it right.
But as we have always said, a school isn’t really a building. It is what happens inside that building that really matters. So I mustn’t get distracted from the business of ensuring the school’s ethos, standards, discipline, teaching and learning, sport, music, arts and drama, and all our wider opportunities for our boys, are worthy of the world class building we are planning.
Even so, I may allow myself, for a moment, just to enjoy the news we’ve all been waiting for!
